Okay, it's like this...
My brother (who is never nice to me..) and my closest friends--even some of my enimies--think I'm a good singer. So I practiced really hard at singing and everyone agrees that I've improved. Now I'm a natural poet, so writing songs is easy for me and I've just learned to play the piano, so I've got the whole package. My goal is to make it in the big time. Even if I fail, I just want to see how it feels to get my words out to the public. (I'm not just trying to be famous and rich. I really want to be a singer because I love to sing and I love public performances) So what do I do now?

Try making a demo CD. It's a small compilation of your best works. Then, you can pass it around to your friends. Or, you can pass it around the school, saying that all proceeds will help with a college intuition (okay, so this may not be the best idea). After a demo, look around your city or county for opportunities to get out there and be recognized. Also, talk to your parents about a talent agent. They are good for finding opportunities for you to perform. A guy at my Middle School got an opportunity to play a small part in a movie, all because his talent agent was looking out for him. The most important thing I can tell you, is just have fun, no matter what! Good luck with it!

Watch the movie Coyote Ugly. It shows some of the struggles of a singer/songwriter trying to make it in the big leagues. A big point in the movie is that she couldn't find anyone to give her the time of day, and that's pretty much the truth. You pretty much have to know someone in the biz, or go on a reality show like American Idol to make it big these days.

Write 12 songs, record them, make copies, pass them out at school and parties, mail them to contests, DJs, make a web site, move to NY, do the club scene, crawl, beg, scrape, sell out, sleep around, compromise your morals and integrity, and possibly you can catch the eye of a recording/publishing/distribution representative who will present a contract in which you sign over the rights to all your songs, likeness and appearances for the next five years.

Go to places where local bands play your style music. You may make friends with a band member and ask them to listen to you sing. If they like you they may offer a chance to 'guest' perform onstage during their gig
