The common story that is told to explain the origin of the term "tennis bracelet" has to do with tennis player Chris Evert.
Supposedly in the 80's, Chris (who was the #1 female player and had won quite a few Grand Slams) was wearing a diamond bracelet while playing in the U.S. Open. During the match, the bracelet broke and the game was halted so that she could gather up all of the diamonds that were scattered around.
Due to that incident, people started to refer to those straight, delicate kinds of bracelets as "tennis bracelets". Hope this helps you!

Charlene is 100% correct. Before 1987's match, it was just a "diamond bracelet."
