Socialism is a political ideology, very close to communism, where the producers possess political power and the means of producing and distributing goods. In a more broad sense, socialism involves taking sectors of an economy or society and placing them under government or group control. It differs from capitalism in that capitalism is based on a "free market" where the means of production and distribution are privately or corporately owned. The economy of the former Soviet Union was a socialist system -- the government basically owned all the means of production and distribution, so the government decided how much everything would cost and how much everyone would get paid for their labor.

Socialism is an economic and political theory which advocates government ownership and administration of the means of production, and the distribution of good and services. There is essentially no private property ownership in a Socialist society. The government owns all property.

In the Socialist societies that existed in Eastern Europe, a person lived in government-owned housing, and was employed by the government. A person's occupation was typically chosen by the government.

Shortages of food and other essential items and services was due to the inability of government to adequately manage the means of production. This lead to the famous "long lines to buy toilet paper", "five year waits for a plumber", etc.

Capitalism: Private enterprise... businesses owned by private individuals where competition controls prices and services.

Socialism: The government siezes control; of all private enterprise, and provides everything for the people according to their needs. Eventually, the system breaks down as there is no incentive to produce goods and services, as there is no profit in it.
