Because it was largely unoriginal.
In many ways, Superman Returns was a remake of the original movie. A very similar plot, and they even extracted some of the dialogue verbatim from the original's script. Given Bryan Singer's track record with superhero flicks, that was disappointing.
The special FX were very good. Brandon Routh will always (and somewhat unfairly) be compared to Christopher Reeve, but he was definitely worthy of the cape. Kevin Spacey did the best he could with a bad script, and I never for one second bought Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. She never "sold" the part, in my opinion.
I've read rumors that the next movie will bring back General Zod. Recycling plots and villains from the previous run of Superman movies is pretty weak; I'd like to see somewhat of a re-invention of the character, as has been done over the years in the pages of DC Comics, not to mention new villains we haven't seen on the big screen before (Braniac, Doomsday, Bizarro, etc).
I went into the theater wanting to love 'Superman Returns', but the bottom line is I didn't.

Not the worst Superman movie, Superman 4 holds that honour. However I was disapointed. Firstly where did they spend the $250 million because I did not see that much on the screen. Secondly, the odd homage to the original film would have been fun. However this film had far to many. This movie was basically a rehash of the first Superman movie without the heart. It just did not grab me emotionally. The actors all did fine jobs with the material they were given, I didn't even have a problem with Lois Lane - the source of many complaints I have seen. So I can only really blame the writers and the director, the story was uninspired and the pacing of the film left a lot to be desired. As someone else has mentioned the death of Superman storyline would have been an ideal story for Superman's return to the movies and we now have the technology to have created a believable Doomsday. I only hope that the lacklustre performance of this movie has not killed off the chance of another.

I think for what the had, the acting was not bad and after watching the special features, Brandon worked his butt off for the role. And the special effects worked for the movie.
What made the movie awful? The fact that the story line revolved around an ENGAGED Lois Lane and Superman. Superman has more morals than to lust after a nearly married woman no matter who she is. Superman stands for Truth and Justice, not lets see how close I can get to Lois and make her kiss me.
That whole SL brought the movie down for me.

I think the next gen will like this superman movie. They never grew up with the original superman, and they probably don't even know that this situation was already done.
So, if you like awsome graphics, heart stopping situations that always end good, and a hero everyone wants to be, then they will like this movie.
Any though deeper than this, and you've lost your audience.

I agree. I thought it seemed kinda cheap and camp. I had really high expectations but rather than going down the Spiderman action route they focused on the romance between Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth. Apparently, they're going to address it with the sequel as it didn't perform as well as they'd hoped.

Not me. It was too long. Didn't have enough action. And nearly put me to sleep. Shame on them ruining the superman name.
