My son keeps passing gas and it smells horrible, I believe that it has something to do with the formula (Enfamel). My husband is lactose intolerate and I think that my son is the same. I am taking my son too the doctors on Dec. 13th and I will mention it too her however, I was just wondering is anyone else experiencing this with they 1 month old.

Also, could a baby be lactose intolerate at such a young age? Should I give him water? I know that only a doctor could really tell me what is best too do with my son however, I just want too hear some advices on what to do in the mean time..

Thank you for responding....

Congratulations on your new baby!!
Trust me, if your baby was lactose-or ANYTHING intolerant- you'd know for SURE! He'd be vomiting and he would have a rash, or he would cry constanly. Babies fart, and that is EXACTLY what you want them to do. Trapped gas in the intestines of a newborn baby is one of the most painful things for a baby, and they will let you know by SCREAMING THEIR HEADS OFF, lol. But, excessive gas tells me one thing for sure: He needs MORE burping. And, trust me again, it takes practice to get it right. Make sure his sweet little mouth is hooked onto the nipple extra extra good, and when he's done, you have to burp him FOR A HALF HOUR sometimes. Yep, sometimes you have to just keep trying to get those burps out, because you know what happens to burps that don't come out?--they turn into gas in his little belly. Don't feel too frustrated, it took me forever to get the hang of it, but once you get it you will be popping those burps up like a PRO! Now, my good advice shouldn't ever replace your doctor's opinion, but I'm telling you honey, after 2 boys within 14 months I swear I think I have seen it all...And, please don't worry too much. You're a good Momma! Just keep trying to burp extra well after every feeding (which is hard as heck when it's 3 am and your eyes are wanting to close...). Oh, and about the extra water: Remember, since the formula is mostly water, he probably won't need water till 3-4 months or so. Good Luck, new Momma! ♥♥♥

Your son having smelly gas is is not a sign of lactosed intolerance. If he cries after you feed him and is acting cramped or vomiting a lot after feeding then he may be lactose intolerent and can be switched to another formula. Do not give him water he needs all the nutrution that the formula gives...water will make him less hungry and he won't get the nutrients he needs.

You should not change your child's formula to soy without your docs approval.

I wouldn't wait until the 13th I would give the doctor a call. Yes it could be that the enfamil is not agreeing with him. He must definitely can be lactose intolerant at this age, thats why you should call, because he may just be a matter of time before his poor lil stomach starts cramping up. You really don't need to give him water because there is water mixed with the formula.

I do believe that it is possible for a baby so young to be lactose intolerate, you might want to ask your doctor about switching your formula to Enfamil Soy. Or it could just be gas, my son had it when he was first born and it passed all by itself, and he was breast fed. Little Tummies also make gas relief drops that work wonders. Good Luck.

Babies can not be lactose intolerant BUT they can be sensitive to the protein in cow's milk. However 30%-50% of babies sensitive to cow based formula are sensitive to soy as well.

My baby is breastfed and his gas was AWFUL smelling the first 3 months, and is still pretty bad. So it may be normal.

NO you should not give him water. Water can cause water intoxication

"For newborns (especially under 4-5 weeks), water supplements can be risky
Babies under two months should not be given supplemental water.
Water supplements are associated with increased bilirubin levels in jaundiced newborns.
Too much water can lead to a serious condition called oral water intoxication.
Water supplements fill baby up without adding calories, so water supplements can result in weight loss (or insufficient weight gain) for the baby. "

Is your son experiencing any signs of pain? such as lots of burping, spitting up, or cramping after eating. You could always try to switch his formula. But don't go switching back and forth every other week. Just try to find something that works. Don't give straight water that young he needs the formula.

Diffent types of formula cause diffent kinds of smelly gas. Is your baby spitting up alot or really fussy or has a ton of loose stools? My daugther had a milk-allergy and was put on Nutramagin (expinsive stuff)and her gas is stinky too. My son was on Isomil (soy) and his smelt bad as well but it was a different smell. So its all in the compounds of the formula. You are right totalk with your doctor if you are concerned.
