The motivation was "Stalin's and the Politburo's desire to eliminate all possible sources of opposition to the government. They sought to ensure that members of the Party would follow the orders of the center, identified with Stalin and his circle, in strict accordance with the principle of democratic centralism. Another official justification was to remove any possible "fifth column" in case of a war, but this is less substantiated by independent sources".

The official "reason" for the officer purge was suspected Nazi infiltratation, but by 1939, really it could have been disagreeing with Stalin on anything.

To remove all opposistion. It's really very simple. Have you ever read Macchovelli's book. I think its called the Black Prince. Remove your enemies and you have... everything. New foes will arise, but because of fear it will be fewer. It's a basic form of control remove everyone who doesn't think like you. Like Hitler and the Japanese he took control of the schools and educated most of the youth to his way of thought.
