im making people scarves of handmade earrings this year. scarves take quite a bit of time. several hours at least so if you plan on giving a lot of gifts, this probably isn't te way to go this close to christmas. but you probably have time to make a few if you really wanted.
earrings on the ither hand take anywhere from 5-45 minutes a pair and are pretty cheap. just go to a bead shop, pick up some beads, head pins, earrings wires (the part that goes in ur ears) and maybe some chanadlier parts if you don't want to make simple drop earrings. you'll need a pair of needle nose or round nose pliers if you dont ahve a pliers lying around and a wire cutter (but most pliers have one built in). just slide some beads on the head pin, use the pliers to make loop at the top ann attach to the earring wire. voila! insant earring! Michaels.com has an animated tutorial on using headpins if you need more then my quick and dirty guidelines lol.
the best part is you can make several pairs for under 20 bucks.!
for guys, make them cookies. i have yet to met a guy whos eyes don't light up when they open a big box of cookies and they realize they dont have to share cause its their christmas present lol.
mix CDs work too

when you say mates do you mean friends or your mate?
for the mate a homemade coupon book for back massages and other stuf if you know what i mean
for your friends you could alway make a candle with something that represents you in it
or scratch off lotto cards those are the best to get and give so much fun to see who wins and who loses,
it is always the thouught that matters so no matter what just put some thought into it it doesnt have to cost alot as long as they can feel the thought in it

I have been making alpine fleece blankets for all of my family. There is no sewing, and there are many prints/textures of fleece available at a good fabric store.
I purchase 2 yards of 2 different pieces. I lay them out flat , one on top of the other, with the patterns on the outside. I cut a 6 inch square out of each corner, and then, along each side and every inch, I cut 6 inch strips, cutting through each piece of fabric. Then just tie the strips together, one from each piece to tie the pieces together and make a fringe edge.
That's it.

Take pictures of you together and then make a collage about what makes them great and then put it in a frame. It is fun and easy. Have fun.
