We are not much on reality tv so investing in an xbox system but don't know what kind of games to get. Consider our age 40+ have already invested in Tiger Woods PGA Tour but would like a few more options and I know nothing about the games.

I would suggest the Madden titles, NBA Live, and other sports titles if you prefer them. If you like shooting games, "Halo 2" has grown into cult status. Not sure what other genre's you may like.

Try renting some games before you buy.
I recommend Fable. You play as a hero, who is given the option of doing things in a good way or in an evil way, and your choices affect how your game plays out. It needs a lot of time invested in it, but it's fun and immersive and has a wicked sense of humour.
You could also try some racing games, like Midnight Club 3 or Need for Speed.
