I am divorced, a single mom working two jobs to make ends meet. I have been divorced for two years and decided the wedding ring isn't doing much sitting in the jewelry box and it certainly doesn't mean anything to me anymore. I want to sell it so I had a jeweler look at it and they said it was worth $1200....she said whatever you do, don't go to a pawn shop. So I called another jeweler...they offered me $125!! I about died. There are a TON of wedding rings for sale on eBay so I don't feel I would get much out of it there either...any suggestions?? I would love to have the money for Christmas shopping....

Well, did the jewler who appraised it for $1200 offer to buy it from you? If not, you might have to accept the fact that you're not going to get what it's worth for a resale value. eBay and Craig's List are both good ideas, but like you said, there are millions of rings on there. You probably wouldn't get a good deal. Did the jeweler tell you WHY you shouldn't take it to a pawn shop? I have had good experiences with them in the past when it comes to jewelry. Or you could always put a classified ad in the paper, but honestly, I bet not too many people buy wedding rings from the paper. At least go to a pawn shop and see what they say they'll offer you. You don't have to take their offer if you don't like it!!

if it were me i would go back to the place that said it was worth 1200 and get the appraisal documented
Then i would attempt to sell it on eBay- it cant hurt, plus you have the paper saying that you are not asking too much for it
if all else fails you can ask a jeweler to buy it. i know they might not give you as much as you would like, but some of them can melt it down and use the metal and gems to make more jewelry and will pay more than a pawn shop for it

Yes--I realize that the value of a ring is practically nothing when you try to resell it. Finding a private buyer (through an ad in the newspaper) may or may not get results, but that's an option. If you can afford to do so, you may have the option of trading it in for other jewelry and the trade-in value will probably be significantly higher than what you could sell it for. The new piece of jewelry could represent your independence. If you decide to hang on to it, you could save it for your chn. Another thing--I would be careful who I sold the ring to as you will always have to look at it if you sell it to a friend and/or relative. Happy holidays!!

Well i have been in your position before...not the making ends meet part but what to do with the ring... generally most jewlers will only give you what the ring is worth in weight...and carat of gold... is there jewles in the ring? diamonds etc..then they would consider the size and clarity of the diamond and cut.... i would almost suggest you take it to a pawn shop get the best price for it and leave it.... after the due date the ring becomes property of the pawn shop and you may have negotiated a better price with them than a jewler..

my 2 cents..

just because there are tons of rings on ebay dosent mean you wont get a good price for yours. I'm sure there is someone out there looking for the perfect ring and you have it. Try ebay i bet thats a good choice. Dont take it to a pawn shop you wont get much money.

go to a jewelry store and get it appraised, then when you walk in to a jewelry store you can start the bidding at the actual value of the ring and show your jeweler the certificate. chances are most people are trying to missle you out of extra cash. do you have an area in your city that concentrates on diamonds and jewelry? (ie. NYC has a diamond district) and its a good place to buy and sell diamonds. most of the stores are in clusters.

Just keep getting prices from jewelers and pawn shops. Sooner or later someone will offer you a good price.

Why don't you use the jewelry exchange. Make it into something else? I know you could use that money, but it still is a sentalment value. You should put it up on ebay and see what you get. Don't be afraid. What are you hoping for? $ or to get rid of it!

Keep the ring tucked away in a place where u don't see or think about it - Even though u are divorced, your children may value something like that and you'll have something that meant a lot to you at one point to give to them when they get older. $100 is not worth it.

Try the newspaper or Craig's List. Also, try a pawn shop and see how much you can get out of it. It may be more than you think.
