Depo provera is a form of birth control in the form of an injection you have your doctor give you every three months. It is highly effective, but it has horrible side effects. Most women gain weight. I, myself gained 25 pounds in just one month. I had headaches, hot flashes, moodiness, and loss of sex drive. I stopped taking it because i began to bleed so heavily, I thought I was hemmoraghing. Some women lose their hair, and suffer with body aches and pains too.

Its all progesterone(sp?) which causes bone loss I was on it for 8 years, i believe it caused my migraine headaches.
It was nice only having to get it once every 3 months & only having spotting when the shot was due, my sister tried it & bled for 5 months straight tho.... BUT....
Last year my dr. told me i needed a bone scan b/c the shot can cause bone loss, well my ins. at the time didnt cover it so i didnt have it done. I swicthed ins. companies a few months ago & luckily my new one covered the scan. The results were almost devistating, they told me that if I didnt immediately get off the shot & start taking a calcium supplement that i would be crippled in 10 years!
Im only 25 & they diagnosed me with Osteopenia, which is close to Osteoporosis (thinning and deterioration of bone mass), had it progressed it would have been osteoporosis. Usually that is found in realy old people. If i was to falll tomorrow I would probably fracture a hip. Luckily because I am so young they said it can be reversed if I take calcium & do weight bearing exersizes. I didnt think something so serious could happen.
If you want it for short term use I would say its probably safe, but definitely not for prolonged usage.
Like I said, I was on it for 8 years & unfortuantely it didnt make me gain any weight. I am very thin & was kind of looking forward to that side effect from it.
GOOD LUCK & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

depo-provera is an injected contraceptive that consists primarily of a molecule that is similar to progesterone. The shot works by suppressing the release of the egg from the ovaries during the menstrual cycle. This significantly reduces the likelyhood of conception for up to three months. If one decides to stop taking the shot, they may not be able to conceive for up to nine months.
Side effects include irregular and unpredictable bleeding or spotting, an increase or decrease in menstrual bleeding, or no bleeding at all, weight gain, headaches, nervousness, abdominal discomfort, dizziness and weakness or fatigue.

It diffrent and varies from woman to woman. I was on it 9 months and it felt like an eternity. I spotted everyday! never had a day without a pad! I gained 30 pounds. I went into sever depression. So if you have a family history of depression I would advice to stay away from it.
The patch reacted very similar just in a milder form. The pill and the IUD have been the best in my case. Do the reaserch and decide what you feel is best and also ask your DR what they think is best for you

not sure on the side effects, hun, but first of all i don't like shots and most people don't. and secondly if you by chance have a bad reaction to birthcontrol you can't stop it so you'll be sick and uncomfortable for the three months or so that it's in your blood stream.
the only effect i know of is constant bleeding. my friend would have her period for over a month and then nothing for like three and then bleed again for like a month. i suggest you go with the pill or the ring. though i dislike the ring too. and that patch is annoying as hell. i'm on the pill and i've had no ill side effects except for strange cravings. i haven't gotten pregnant or had anything happen in the 8 months i've been on it.

Depo-Provera is a birth control shot you receive every three months. It releases a hormone called progesterone (no estrogen, which is good) that prevents a woman's eggs from being released and therefore prevents fertilization.
Common side effects are weight gain and irregular (or no) bleeding.
Long term issues are increased risk of osteoporosis and possible allergic reactions. It affect on breast cancer is still not known.
Pros:
-less menstrual cramping and pain
-fewer periods
-less chance of anemia
-lowered ovarian cancer risk
-lowered endometrial cancer risk
-lowered pelvic inflammatory disease risk
-very reliable (up to 99.7% effective)
On another note, I was on Depo shots for about 5 years and loved it. My periods completely stopped, which I liked. I did not suffer any weight gain or other negative side effects.
Hope some of this helps!

I'd say if you are thinking about getting it then you should seriously look online or ask your doctor. There are a few side effects that I know about. One of which being, it is in your system for 3 months and if your body reacts negatively then there is really nothing they can do.

Don't do it! I gain so much weight from that darn thing! Also I never menstruated for the year that I was on it. In retrospect that is really unhealthy.
