I mean, I know that it takes the smell away, but what is the significance of the match? Does it have to do with the sulfur on the match, or just the fact that something is burning?

It is simply that the smell of sulfur overpowers other smells. In the sea-faring days the smells in the hulls of ships were so bad that they lit gunpowder so that the sulfur smell would help to cover the other smells.

The sulfur is a stronger smell than the fart or other. So, therefore, mostly in the old days they used this method. They didn't have air fresheners to spray. It really is a good method that works.

People are strange and will do strange things to get attention so Lighting a match after farting well some people try to light them on fire witch is a bad idea and can cause internal burns I just light a match to light a candle to get rid of the smell.

I think some people think that it burns off the methane. I don't think it takes the smell away, it just distracts you with the smell of the smoke.

Probably just the fact that a match is readily available. I imagine that a lighter would suffice quite nicely in that respect.
