I don't think there is any customary time, just more or less when you personally feel that you have given them enough in return. Please take into account the environment at your present job. If they are cutthroat and are likely to fire you, you should be ready to move at any time.

As far as how it looks to other employers, you may come off as mercenary, if they can connect the dots. Or you may look like someone who knows how to get ahead.

Final answer, 2-3 months if they don't make things better for you.

This assumes that the school was fairly expensive.

Leaving your job without letting an appropriate amount of time go by would be a huge negative against you and will ultimately hurt you in the end. Now some employers actually have contracts specifying the amount of time you need to stay. For example, when I worked at one place, that time was 3 years.

The point is that an employer doesn't want to waste training time and money on someone who simply uses it to go elsewhere. So I would suggest you stay at least a year or two afterwards. This sends the message that you simply didn't take advantage of their paying for school to move on. This way, if you decide to leave after this time, you won't be viewed as a "bad person" and will get a good recommendation from them.

wait atleast a year after the schooling is done or be ready to pay the company back for the tuition which some companies will do if you leave soon after

It does look bad, and it sounds bad if someone calls them for a reference and they let them know you did it. They take a risk that you'll be disloyal, so they know a few will do it. Personally I would wait a year.
