Every time I go in the shelter I get sad and wish I could take them all. I love animals so much and hate to see them caged up and begging to be loved. Some of the cats make me laugh because they're really laying on the charm, and I just want to take them home so bad!!! I already have 2 cats in a small townhouse, so I can't get anymore. I plan to adopt 2 to 4 dogs once I get a house with a big yard. Does anyone else feel so bad for them and want them all or am I a freak?

Yeah, I feel the same way.

So instead of "wishing" and doing nothing about it - I VOLUNTEER at the shelter and i help animals find good homes! I can't take them all home (or I would be the crazy dog lady) but I can HELP them all find homes. I think you should try volunteering.

PS - to those of you who think most shelter dogs get put to sleep, you are WRONG! You'd be surprised how many find homes, get put into foster care and are helped to find a home. Do your part by adopting ONLY the number of animals you have the time and money to care for, getting your PETS FIXED - to keep unwanted animals OUT of shelters

Oh, you are far from being a freak, and many more people share your sentiment. :)

Yes I do wish, and I volunteer at our local Humane Society so I see these poor babies 3 times a week. I have a bad habit of picking out my favorites when I visit, but sadly, I cannot take them home with me. If I lived in the country instead of a small city, I would certainly change their lives for the better.

The cats and the dogs are easier to rehome then some of the other critters they care for there. I go for the underdogs.

There are animals there that are so despised by humans that they may never find a home, and they are in danger of being euthanized sooner rather then later.

The underdogs are the rats. Even the hamsters, mice, gerbils, guinea pigs, and rabbits find homes before the rats do. I tend to adopt any of the rats that come in. No one at the Humane Society seems to know how to care for them properly, so I adopt the rats ASAP.

you are NOT a freak. i feel the same and thats why i get so frustrated with these people that want their pets to have litters for stupid reasons. i don't understand why pet parents have such a hard time with the concept of spaying or neutering. everyone should HAVE to volunteer at a shelter for a month before they can get a pet just so they have first hand experience of the over population. these animals didn't ask for this situation and since humans are responsible for the problem, humans need to take the responsibility to fix it.
whenever someone asks where to go to find a family pet i always say ANIMAL SHELTERS.
a few months ago the Conway, NH animal shelter had about 40 purebred and mixed pit bulls!!!!! but it's because everyone wants to breed. there are not enough homes for whats out there but they feel its ok to keep breeding.
sorry. i get carried away. its just such a simple idea and humans are suppossed to be SOOOO smart.
my dogs (all fixed by the way) are smarter than most people i know.

My childrens have been young human beings as quickly as I first began fostering. They enjoyed animals, and have been taught from an early age the thank you to attend to them, so it grow to be a sturdy relatives interest. maximum shelters or rescues take care of the scientific costs, yet how they do it only relies upon on the team. as quickly as I did breed rescue I took the canines into the vet and paid for each little thing, and the rescue reimbursed me. Now the seem after for which I foster takes the canines in, and looks after each and all of the scientific standards devoid of my help. in addition they furnish me with nutrition....the rescue reimbursed me. You in no way understand how long an animal will stay. I actual have had them for below a week, or as long as seven months. maximum communities supply determination to the foster while it includes adoption.

Yes I want to take them home. I had 2 dogs already when the animal shelter was doing it's adoption day at the local petstore. For six weeks I kept coming on Sat to the adoption and the same dog was always there. I kept hoping she would be adopted. She was so friendly--yet no one was adopting her. I kept saying to myself I had no more room or money or time to take care of a third dog, but I took her home and it was the right decision.

I think you have to fight temptation but if something keeps driving you back and the same dog is still there, it means something.

Yes!!!! I always go in there anyway, just to visit and play with the animals and to donate. The reasons most people have for getting rid of their pets usually don't fly. They are a member of the family, not just there for the person's amusement, and at the slightest inconvenience, off they go. I also hate the many apartment buildings don't allow animals. I think that rather than baning them, they should just do regular inspections to see that everything is clean. That is they should work with pet owners, rather than discourage them from having pets; too many need homes!!

I happened to chance upon an animal shelter recently, sad is not the word...it's horrendous. But what can people do? Have you ever taken the time to see pictures of starving children in Africa? That is sad, with so much food going to waste everyday from each and every developed household.
The awful bit is animals can't voice their concerns, so can we as humans take advantage over them as granted?
Nice quesion you asked, and no, you are not a freak. You are just displaying your emotions. :)

I went to the animal shelter for about 2 weeks before I decide on my 1 year sprayed short haired calico who shared a similar name with me. I originally wanted one of the two orange kittens with blueish eyes but they were more then I thought they were so I filled out an app and left and came back the following week to get him and he was alittle to hyper for my taste I'd hope he would mellow out with me as he grew. He already had an app before mine and had an eye infection or some kind infection... I had see one cat that reminded me of the gray one I had when I lived in the basement of my great grandmothers...you know the really fuffly kind but when I spent time with her she was nice but then clawed my hips when I was just there watching her play in the little room they stick you in. Sorry...I'm rambling on...most of the ones we really liked got adopted and I am like you when I was there I wished I could have them all...I never checked out the dogs. I also wanted to adopt the little finches they had but they weren't adoptable.

I hate going to the shelter...I cant decide when I'm there..its like your betraying the ones left behind. I have rescued a few from there just from how they acted in the kennels.. I knew they were outstanding dogs and deserved better so I bring them home work and evaluate them and find homes for them myself. Though that didnt work for one...she still here after 6 yrs...lol

No. You are not a freak. I feel the exact same way. I rescued my dog from an animal shelter. When I saw him, I refused to go home without him, and we've been best friends ever since.
