I am a Laker fan and I am a Kobe fan, but the answer is NO and NO. Letters in all-caps to stress the answers. Artest and Big Ben have won Defensive players of the year before. Really, I would think that everyone you have listed are better defenders.

Sorry, I'm a Kobe fan but he doesn't play amazing defense. He's a decent to good player for his position at SG, but is mostly an on the ball defender. Give him credit because he can play good defense, but not as great as the other guys u mentioned including Andrei Kirilenko, Artest, Big Ben, KG, Tim Duncan, Bruce Bowen, etc. And definitely not on the top 20 defensive all time. I'm a Kobe fan, but he's not the greatest defender. Kobe should just stick to being the scoring machine he is.

No way, first of all you cannot compare era's with defense in the NBA because the game has changed so much over the years. Back in the day the NBA used to be a lot of half court sets and now it is up and down. Personally I feel that Bruce Bowen is the best one on one defender in the NBA, and Ben Wallace is the best off the ball defender in the NBA.

It's hard to judge Kobe's defense, considering that he doesn't bother playing it most of the time. He's a good man-to-man defender, but his defense often gets left behind in favor of offense, especially in the second half.
All of those guys you mentioned are far better defenders, on a regular basis, than Kobe. Kobe might have great defensive potential, but it's not realized. And to think he's top 20 all time is just crazy.....there are hundreds better than him from even the past 20 years.

Kobe has average defensive skills at best and given the way they play defense in the NBA these days that isn't very good. Kobe isn't the best in the league now and in no way the top 20 of all time.

Geez that is a good question. I think he can be considered "the best"...when he wants to be.
I think the difference between him and say Artest, Wallace or Bowen is that he is more of an all-around player whereas the other guys (perhaps less so for Artest) concentrate on Defense.
