I don't exactly know, but I don't like it. I find it patronizing...as in "oh honey, that's completely wrong" instead of "dipshi t, you're wrong."

But it's used as a term of endearment for their friends too I guess...I just don't like it. Only my mom gets to call me honey :I

I live in the South and that's a huge thing here- "hun" can either be a condescending term, or one of endearment. I think it's how women try to establish a connection with others, calling someone by a pet name automatically makes interactions more intimate. I personally don't like it when people I don't know call me "hun", but it's a cultural thing that their mothers probably did and I'm not going to waste my time changing their minds about it!

I think it's more of a predominant trait in the southern states than elsewhere, another common misnomer that I hear all the time (I live in Texas btw) is "shug" as in short for sugar. If anyone has seen episodes of King of the Hill you know what I'm talking about.

I f*cking hate that, especially when it is a girl younger than me. If any women read this, it is annoying, so stop, and it kind of makes you seem like your belittling someone. If your younger than the other person, it doesn't make you seem more intelligent or older.
I am from the south and I don't say that.

I agree with ZOE it's patronizing.

Dude, I have no idea...
Maybe thay use it as a show of affection?
Maybe it's just a silly little pet name they use for everyone?
Maybe they swear everyone likes them?
I guess there's no single reason for a question that refers to a multitude of people.

Like older waitresses and such? It's a way of being friendly without having to put too much effort into it. It's nice.
