I was sent to the plant manager the other day and advised that I have been overpaid for the last two years, and that they wanted their money back! They told me that I could pay it back in a lump sum (over $5,900.00) or that they would give me 52 weeks to pay it back. What should I do?

Yes, as it turns out, they did overpay me. If I have to take 52 weeks to pay it back, it will surely put me in a financial bind and I don't think that would be fair.

Thats their problem. I would keep it and find a new job. The person in payroll Accounts payable should be held responsable for the loss - not you

Why are you going to contact the labor board? Did they overpay you? If they didn't, then sure, contact the Labor Board. If they did overpay you then figure out if you can pay it back right away or if you need to have a certain sum taken out of your check.
You should also contact the IRS to inform them of this situation as you may have money coming back to you.
Added: Sorry to anyone who didn't like the answer, but if you think I'm wrong, check these links (and it may vary from state to state, so you would need to check your state's laws).
Added: Well you were overpaid, so you had financial gain when you shouldn't have. It is partially your responsibility - most people, when they accept a job, have an idea of what their take home pay will be. They would have most likely noticed that their paycheck was larger than it should have been. You benefited when you shouldn't have.
Think of it this way: if you paid for a sweater by check, and wrote the check out for $100 more than it should have been, shouldn't you have the right to go back and get your $100 back? Why should the store benefit from your mistake? You would be entitled to your money back, just as the company is entitled to theirs.

Have you been overpaid? Is what they are paid you, the amount they agreed to pay? If they did overpay you, pay it back over 52 weeks with no interest (it's their mistake, after all).

NO NO NO NO NO DO NOT GIVE THEM THAT MONEY. If they made errors in paying you that is the fault of their accountant, you are not responsible for payroll errors! Ask to see the records and definetly take it up with a higher authority. They cannot do that to you.

If I were you, I'd describe an unnatural act and suggest that they all perform it upon eachother. One or two paychecks, maybe but two years? That's their fault and you shouldn't suffer for it. In the words of Nancy Reagan, just say no!

Umm, something is not right. It is not your fault that they over paid you. I would call a lawyer or call the President of the company...that isn't right. Dont pay it back!!!

It's the company's mistake, they should just suck it up. I would definitely check with your local labour board.
