Ok I am a stay at home mom and we have decided not to buy Christmas gifts this year ( and last year) as not to strain our finances. Last year we bought presents for the younger kids in our extended family but not adults, and the adults in the extended family bought a gift for our daughter. Do we need to announce again that this is how we will be handeling the gift giving because I know my mother in law is buying my husband and I gifts and we do not plan to buy her a gift. i don't want to feel obligated to buy gifts because other family members choose to buy us gifts. I am no scrooge but how do we handle this situation?

I agree with what Becka siad. And I don't see anything wrong with what you are doing. I celebrate Christmas, but I think that a lot of people burn themselves out (physically and financially) with trying to buy everybody gifts. I just don't think it's necessary to spend as much as we do on presents. Most of the presents just end up being thoughtless gifts that we buy because we feel obligated to.
There are better and more meaningful ways to celebrate Christmas than going in debt and stressing out.

The only thing you can do is reiterate your point to the adults in your family that usually participate in gift giving. After having done this if they still choose to buy you a gift just accept it graciously because they already knew that you did not plan to give gifts this Christmas.

If you did it last year and it worked, then by all means do it again this year - soon!
