To be honest, there isnt one. Circumcision is merely an old fashion that hasn't died out. Circumcision used to be strictly popular amongst specific religions, such as the Jewish faith, but towards the end of world war 1, it became a popular occurance. This was due to the belief that another war could happen and all the boys would need to be sent to war. By circumcising them, sand wouldnt get under the foreskin and therefore wouldnt cause any sort of infection.

We now know however, that the foreskin is quite an important part of the penis, meaning that circumcision is quite unnecessary. Here is a list of different parts of the foreskin which have been found to be helpful in keeping the foreskin clean, moist, protected and even help with the ladies ;)

Foreskin:
The foreskin comprises roughly 50% (and sometimes more) of the mobile skin system of the penis. If unfolded and spread out flat, the average adult foreskin would measure about 15 square inches - the size of a three-by-five index card. This highly specialized tissue normally covers the glans and protects it from abrasion, drying, callusing (also called keratinization), and contaminants of all kinds.

Frenar Band, or Ridged Band:
The frenar band is a group of soft ridges near the junction of the inner and outer foreskin. This region is the primary erogenous zone of the intact male body. Loss of this delicate belt of densely innervated, sexually responsive tissue reduces the fullness and intensity of sexual response.

Meissner's Corpuscles:
Circumcision removes the most important sensory component of the foreskin - thousands of coiled fine-touch receptors called Meissner's corpuscles. Also lost are branches of the dorsal nerve, and between 10,000 and 20,000 specialized erotogenic nerve endings of several types. Together these detect subtle changes in motion and temperature, as well as fine gradations in texture.

Frenulum:
The frenulum is a highly erogenous V-shaped structure on the underside of the glans that tethers the foreskin. During circumcision it is frequently either amputated with the foreskin or severed, which destroys or diminishes its sexual and physiological functions.

Dartos Fascia:
Circumcision removes approximately half of this temperature-sensitive smooth muscle sheath which lies between the outer layer of skin and the corpus cavernosa.

Immunological System:
The soft mucosa (inner foreskin) contains its own immunological defense system which produces plasma cells. These cells secrete immunoglobulin antibodies as well as antibacterial and antiviral proteins, including the pathogen killing enzyme lysozyme.

Lymphatic Vessels:
The loss of these vessels due to circumcision reduces the lymph flow within that part of the body's immune system.

Estrogen Receptors:
The presence of estrogen receptors within the foreskin has only recently been discovered. Their purpose is not yet understood and needs further study.

Apocrine Glands:
These glands of the inner foreskin produce pheromones - nature's powerful, silent, invisible behavioral signals to potential sexual partners. The effect of their absence on human sexuality has never been studied.

Sebaceous Glands
The sebaceous glands may lubricate and moisturize the foreskin and glans, which is normally a protected internal organ. Not all men have sebaceous glands on their inner foreskin.

Langerhans Cells:
These specialized epithelial cells are a component of the immune system in the penis.

These different aspects of the foreskin are too important to be removed, so why would you? There isn't much of a point in circumcison. I understand that there are people who find happiness in being circumcised, and good for them, but in my own opinion, there is far too much good in a foreskin to get rid of it. There isn't any point to circumcision but an old wives tale from before WWII.

Hope that helps,

EDIT: I have just taken a read of the answeres below mine and noticed Donovan's answer. Agreed dude, by saying its a mutilation of the body does sound quite crude, but its true. I too was circumcised as an infant, and i believe that my body was mutilated unnecesarily for no reason at all. Circumcision is a barbaric practice that can have many complications. I don't believe it is necesary at all. Have you considered Foreskin Restoration? so you wont be able to get back everything that i listed above, but you can get back some of what was taken away. Send me a message if you are interested in finding out more about Foreskin Restoration, its the only way of gaining back what we had taken away from us!

There really isn't any point. It used to be believed that it would keep boys from masturbating or reduce their pleasure in sex so much that they would be faithful to their wives. It didn't work. Then the excuse was made that it was somehow cleaner - wrong again! A cut penis that isn't washed is dirty, too. Would you cut off your ear to save the "trouble" of washing behind it? Keeping an intact penis clean is really very easy.

Some shallow twits think circumcised penises look cuter. Not a reason to mutilate ones reproductive organ. And if these fluff-heads ever had experience with a whole man, they would find that it's much, much better.

Circumcision is genital mutilation. It is against the law to cut away the healthy foreskin of a baby boy is Sweden. Other countries should follow that enlightened example. In fact more than 80% of the men in the world are uncut, and the percentage is growing.

Oh, yes, there is one "valid" reason for this barbaric practice - it makes a LOT of money for doctors and hospitals - but wouldn't a man be better off just giving them the money and keeping his equipment the way nature intended?

Donovan - I'm sorry you were cut. It wasn't your choice, and you're certainly not to blame. But the fact is that you've had a body part amputated - mutilation is a correct name for it. You're probably a fine person who will make a woman very happy, but you have been mutilated. Sorry.

There are many reasons, most of them trivial. It's important in some religions and cultures. Some people think it's cleaner, but this is largely untrue. If a guy has good hygiene concerning his foreskin, he will have little/no smell nor the substance called smegma. There have been studies to see if circumcision lowers infection and STD rates, including HIV; there are studies that support both sides (see links).

The worst reason for circumcision - and certainly the most common, albeit under the disguise of hygiene - is that it "looks" cleaner and better. Clearly that's a personal bias, otherwise about 80% of the world's male population wouldn't be uncircumcised.

There is very little reason for circumcision. But there are a few rare cases (like 1-2% of all men) who may need circumcision due to medical reasons. This doesn't mean that all men should get circumcised becuase the complication rates is about the same, if not slightly higher. So, it evens out.

There are a lot of good reasons. Simplified daily hygiene, looks better, women in the USA prefer it, better head, preventative or first line of defense against various diseases (e.g., HIV when the woman is the transmitter of the disease). Cultural reasons in the USA, the Philippines, So. Korea, the Pacific Islands including HI, many tribes in Africa and Australian natives, also to a lesser extent in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia., and religious reasons in the US, among Jews and Moslems, and in Israel, and in all Islamic countries.

If it is so important, the foreskin, then why do some people get circumcized and not jewish? Yes I don't really know the importance of it. But for those of us who are, please don't call it genital mutilation. Thats very hurtful to us circumcized as babies. We didn't choose this. It may be against the law in other countries but it isn't in America. So be respectful and don't call it genital mutilation. It makes me feel like i've been mutilated. Its not such a big deal. People who get penis enlargements, breast augmentation, any plastic surgery not done for health is unnatural, technically. Are they keeping they're bodies the way nature intended for them? No. Does it look like I can understand anything about all the stuff that one guy said about functions of the foreskin? I don't, I can't even pronounce some of those words.

Religious reasons and people doing it because they believe its cleaner yet i recently read an article about a group of people who researched whether it was cleaner proved it wasn't, its probably more likely that people who do get circumsized were more consicious about being clean down there...also if the foreskin is too tight (causing pain) they remove it.

Keeps the person from getting so much prone infections since it's keeping moisture and bacteria in a closed enviroment. Bacteria Love moist dark places that are neglected!

there is no point. it is a useless procedure.

those who argue it's cleaner are too lazy to clean the head of the dick. hell, our ears get dirty at times too. but should we remove them to keep the ear canal clean? no, we clean them ourselves.

i am not going to circumcise my sons. rather, i will let them be born the way He intended them to be, and let them make that decision for themselves when they become of a certain age.
