There might be several causes, but at times it'll all depend on either the USB or the driver included. I mean, if you have a rather old system (like from 5 or 6 years ago) and only supports upro USB ver 1.0 to 1.1, the it might cause tyhe problem. One other factor would be the language barrier I guess. It's not like you're trying out a Japanese software over an operating system in French.

See what you can do with the dvd manufacturer and if they have a driver that supports it in english.

I have vista and I'm not sure how to search for new hardware either, other than opening "add new hardware" in control panel, but that says to use the installation CD if you have one anyway. Is your PC saying "unknown device" when you attach the external drive or is it just doing nothing? I've never had vista not automatically recognise that something was attached. To work out if it is your drive has failed or the USB ports are mysteriously not working, have you got something else you can test the USB ports with, like a flash drive or a mouse? If the ports are fine then your drive has probably failed.

First try to connect it to a different usb port if you have one. Next did you download the latest drivers from the companys website. Last make sure you have all windows updates installed..
