Airships, zeppelins, derigibles, or whatever you want to call them were fairly common at the time. Because early heavier-than-air aircraft (planes) were fairly fragile and didnt have much lift capacity, airships (lighter than air aircraft) were used often because they could lift more weight and fly further than most airplanes of the day. Germany pioneered this practice and even used airships to bomb England in the Great War, without tremendous success. The Hindenburg was not the only hydrogen-filled aircraft in its day. HOwever, once people realized the volatility of hydrogen, the practice was discontinued.

In 1936, the Zeppelin Company built the largest airship ever made. It was financed by the government of Nazi Germany and named after the late, German president, Paul von Hindenburg.
