You don't have to go to any lengths to please anyone in your society. It defies normative behaviors in all societies not to do so though. If you've read The Stranger you'd know one of the possible repercussions of not abiding by your societies set norms.
The main character in the novel was executed by the way.

You really must go to no lengths to please anybody. Most people in the world are capable of taking care of themselves, and for anybody to expect you to 'please' them, or for you to agree with this, is irrational. Live your life, if somebody seeks help and you have the means, offer it, but if you don't want to please anyone, different from helping, don't. The only thing that might happen is some people won't like you, which will probably happen for some reason anyway; que sera sera.

Pleasing others depends on what others think of as "pleasant" and examining that you may find that for many people things like alcohol and drugs and other less obvious methods of quick or slow suicide are again thought of as "pleasant". Therefore decide to always do what YOU think is right instead of pleasant.

If you try to please everyone you'll succeed in pleasing no one, including yourself. Nothing wrong with being well-mannered, polite, respectful, etc., but when it comes right down to it there's no rule that says it's your job to please anyone but yourself. You and you alone are responsible for YOUR attitude and YOUR happiness, and no matter what you do you're going to say or do something that someone else isn't going to like, so go ahead and decide that you don't want to please anyone -- other than you. That way, anyone who crosses your path will see the real you, and the people who decide that they like you (or love you) do so because of who and what you are, NOT because of what you do for them.

You're shouldn't have to do anything to please anyone other than yourself. If you are a good person, and you are trying to please yourself, you will undoubtably be doing good towards others. And if you're not a good person, what do you care anyway? So people might hate you, but if you're hateful, what's the difference? I say don't worry about what anybody other than yourself thinks.

Well in America, it's "best" to be an old, white, heterosexual, Christian male with money... :-)
I think it's best to do what pleases you, as long as it isn't murdering other people or hurting other people. In general though, dress as you wish, like who you like and be what you want to be.

You would probably end up being alone and without friends, asking inane questions on Yahoo.

It is impossible to please everyone all the time so
why try. Just please yourself and let everyone else
take care of themselves.
