I always see things about Ryukin goldfish and other "special" types of goldfish. Why is it that a regular goldfish isn't included in shows and contests? My Calico Fantail is very beautiful and I see no big difference between him and the "show-worthy" except shape. He's fairly large, his body is about 5 inches, with tail its about 8. Anybody know why these fish are overlooked?

if your fish is a calico fantail, there's a good chance he is a "speacial" fish! Most "fantail" goldfish sold in petstores are just a bunch of assorted baby Ryukin, Oranda, and Moore goldfish. If your fish has a long body instead of round, he is most likely a Shibunkin goldfish popular in ornamental ponds. Here's the great part...if he's a common comet goldfish and he has a fantail, he is something called a waykin (i have no clue if I spelled that right) it's a physical mutation that causes a regualr fin to split into the pretty butteryfly like pattern. If your fish as this, then he is really speacial. but, to answer your question, it just comes down to breeding clubs. Just like dog shows, it doesn't take a lot to get a mutt, and it takes just a tiny bit more to get non-show quality pure breeds. Breeders put a lot of time and money into trying for a rare color pattern and body shape, just like dog breeders try hard to eliminate thumb prints on min-pins. Did you know that in Japan, there are koi that cost over $10,000? to me, thery're all just colored carp.

hi, i have to say that all goldfish to me are special. i have 3 red cap orandas 1 chocolate oranda and 5 fantails. i do have 2 feeder goldfish in my pond that are just as worthy as the others. to answer your ? maybe its cause there usually bought to feed other fish. but i can say that those feeders if given a chance of life they become awsome kinda think of it this way (like the ugly duck) when i see the feeders and dont ignore them i admire them. so maybe if you pick up a little feeder and raise him i think you will be proud to own such a amazing species! goldfish rule!!...julie

most fish shows have a variety of classes, maybe they didn't have any entries for the calico fantail class
