To identify oneself as male or female is simply an identification of genitalia. To identify oneself as a man or a woman speaks more to character and your place in society. How do you identify yourself, and why?

I identify myself to others by my first name with a handshake if they deserve one. Everything else is irrelevant. I am who I am take it face value or don't it is their choice I don't care one way or the other. What I look like, who I am with or how I speak does not matter to me. Just don't be surprised if I have been underestimated because they are shallow and cannot get past a pair of sun glasses.

I don't think this is a recent development. Every culture adds its beliefs about what it means to be "male" or "female" on top of the the biological differences. The beliefs vary from culture to culture, but certain basics never change.
