Well,

The main way to get higher in Search Engine rankings is to gain links on popular sites. This is simple and most sites link to you if you link to them, so no money involved ;) I have seen many websites go up 40-50 rankings per 4-5 links so it is easy to do.

To get consistently good "organic" (ie. non-paid) rankings in the search engines takes a resource committment -- either time or money. Don't believe any of the "we'll submit your site to a gazillion places and you'll make loads of money" hype. It isn't true. You may get a bunch of "hits" with some of the programs, but few interested people.

The pay per click program Marcus S referred to is called Google AdWords. It's sound quality.

The group announcements is a good idea, but first be sure the group allows the announcements. Otherwise it's spam, which is NOT GOOD.

Someone mentioned inbound links. One way to do this -- and to get more people aware of the site at the same time -- is to write and publish articles, making them available for republication. Maybe something about tradition of Xmas card giving or how ecards have revolutionized card giving.

I have an article called "51 Online Marketing Techniques To Improve Your Website's Success," which can give you more ideas:

There are several other Internet marketing articles in that same section on the Website.

This question also one kind of advertisement :) isn't it ?!!

The best way : Put add in the commercial section of any popular website.

Cheap and fast :
If you member of any yahoo groups or orkut let everybody in the group know about your website. And ask them to spread the news about your site to their friends..If your site is really good
you don't need to worry about the advertisement , the group will take care of that ... One example is YouTube.com ...

All the best

You can do a pay-per-click advertisement. It is advertising through the web. I know google has it (main page, there is a link at the bottom). With them, i believe you set up a budget to subtract the advertisement fees from. Then you select which key words you want to use to have your website come up during the search. Each key word has a specific cost and they allow you to research how much each key words costs on a "per-click" bases <--hence the name.

With mine, I don't even sell anything to anyone. I just offer goods/services that people are already buying, at a better price or value. Start-up cost was a business license, that ran $48 I believe. Sound like what you're looking for?

First thing I would do is write a press release and submit it to http://prweb.com that would get visitors coming to your site within a few days.

Second, I would place classified ads using free online classifieds
http://www.preferredpromoz.com/free-online-classifieds.html

Thirdly, I would write a key word rich article that pertains to your website and submit it to http://www.ezinearticles.com

Each of these is FREE - and doing them will drive hundreds of visitors to your site.

Instant Buzz and Traffic Swarm are good ways to drive traffic to your site other than search engines and classified sites. Try 'em:

I would start by submitting your website to the following directories (in the proper category):
DMOZ : http://www.dmoz.org - (I suggest the category of - http://dmoz.org/Society/Holidays/Christmas/ - just click "suggest url" at the top of the page)

Yahoo! : http://dir.yahoo.com/
