Well, actually, synthroid is a synthetic hormone given because your thyroid was not producing enough hormones. Your low thyroid (or hypothyroidism) would cause the weight gain and the hair loss.

Synthroid should improve those symptoms. You may not be taking enough.

In fact, people lose weight once they get the right doseage, because then there is enough hormone in the body.

It is common to gain weight if you are hypothyroid, but weight loss is a side effect of Synthroid. Synthroid is given to help regulate your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). I do not know why you are on Synthroid, but it can cause hair loss in some people. The weight gain, I'm not sure of. It is a symptom of being hypothyroid though. I would consult your endo. or PCP.

It depends on why you were taking the Synthroid, most people take it for Hypothyroidism but I have recently found out they also use it for people with hyperthyroidism. You might not be getting enough synthroid if you are taking it for hypothyroidism or it might be something else all together. This is something you should talk to your doctor about.
