If the word is so offensive to blacks, why do they use it at each other?

Not all black people say it. I don't. But, there is a difference between what black people say, and what white people say.

Black people use the word in a few different ways... Primarily they will say "n!gga". And that is something they have kinda adopted within the black communites as something more of a term of endearment to use with each other. Basically, saying something like "thats my n!gga", means that is a very good friend of yours. Like a brother or something.
The other way blacks will use it would be when referring to those who do fall directly into the black stereotypes. Ghetto acting, loud, gold teeth, etc. Like the comedian Chris Rock said, "I love black folks, but I can't stand n!ggas".

On the flip side of that, when a white person says the N word, its usually meant in a way to demean that person. Its not meant to be something nice. Its pretty much meant to be that racial slur that it is. And thats never okay, coming from any direction.

I don't understand the use by anyone. I really cannot believe that the black community would even want to use this term when talking about each other. It sounds so disrespectful. That being said, there does seem to be a serious double standard in this country. Why will the black community allow black entertainers to use the word and then blast any other "non-black" for saying it? It is not an endearing term.

OK, if its such a HATEFUL word then why say it to your bother or sister or your home boy or whatever. Us white people don't go around calling each other crackers and stuff. Its really not fair how y'all look at things, so what if we say "******" y'all say it so why shouldn't be we able to say it? I seen a answer that said that we said it back in the day.........lets do some math here how long ago was that?!! i believe its been over a 100 years and guess what i doubt any of those people that used the word then aren't living. Why take our anger out on us today for what our people done back then, its stupid really. If we want to say ****** i think we should be able to without getting the **** beat out of us.

In reference to the African-American lady who labeled the inquirer as an "idiot" for assuming that it is common for blacks to refer to each other as n*ggers: If it is only a matter of a word causing emotional harm to another by being called by it, then how do you justify calling someone an "idiot" ? (which is a derrogatory insult of one's intellect which some people value more than their social status -such as denoted by one being belittled by an ethnical slurr-)

In this matter, call a person a b*tch, n*gger, idiot, tramp.. (and whatever trash words that ye of a lower IQ use on each other), all that matters is that these words are used to create offense to each other. I do not understand why the use of one should be any more offensive than that of another, except that it seems more common for "your type" to want sympathy and frankly just another reason to b*tch about something (and possibly win law suits to finance your drug use).

Double standards.

Black people would claim "they own the word"

and that they took the word an turned it into their own..

The reality is when black people first started using the N word, they were using it as an insult, as original intended.

It is still used in that context by black people but is often used interchangeably with "brother", crackers cant use it because we dont "get" the meaning of it..pmsl...

we dont "understand" the complicated ethnic inferences of the word - it's so advanced and deep in meaning a simple-minded cracker just wouldnt "understand" maaannn...

****** n*ggers, talk sh1te.

"i have issues" : "outsiders have no priviledges...", yeah remember that when your "peoples" come and live in the white-mans country...lol

I agree with the girl who says outsiders have no privledges. which is true. I can see why and how some of us uses the word. It has a different meaning to us coming from another black person than it does coming from a white person. I personally don't agree with anyone using it, it is a nasty word and it only makes us remember what our ancestors were called and how they were treated for so long.

well not really i used to live in ny and everybody pretty much used that word. the only problem its jus a part of the hip-hop culture and doesnt really have a meaning to most people and so they say it as they please. i personally dont find it offensive because it just a word that has no meaning to me but then again i barely really use it.

Yea you have a point! Black people can make fun of eachother and call white people "crackers" and names like that..... but when a white person goes up on a stage and says anything remotely racist (especially against blacks) they get booed off the stage! Black people can get away with anything I guess

You guys had like, I don't know, DECADES to use the word. Now it's our turn. LOL.

Just kidding. But, I don't use the word. I have a daughter who is vietnamese/german and black and I don't want her to ever grow up with a complex.

That word should just be eliminated. For some reason blacks think it's cool. In my opinion, it's ridiculous.
