the engine powers a wood splitter. it is mounted on a trailer. on/off gas shut off valve was left on. i suspect, bouncing wjile driving down the road caused float to move up and down. flooded carb with gas. gas drained into crankcase. is this a likely diagnosis?

what else could it be?

not sure if all is ok, just started working on it. checked float, it is operating properly. drained off oil to level with check opening. truned on gas, waiting to see, if gas additional gas gets into crankcase. so far, no gas. before draining and changing iol, wanted to make sure no more gas was getrting into crankcase.

all is ok you are correct in that the gas run down into the cylinder and run past the compression rings into the crankcase...believe it or not gas will go right past the rings even if the rings are working perfectly...there is always a ring gap and although 3000 psi explosion wont get far... 10 minutes of gas can be a teaspoon full or so...change the oil (don't use the thinned out oil) and remember the fuel shut off and you'll be fine.good luck!

Well lets think about this, the fuel is pressurized along the fuel rail going to each injector and the injector is electronically activated to open at a specific time, then it closes when no electronic signal is sent to it by means of a spring, within this little thingamabob called an injector is a seat so that no fuel can leak past in the closed position, however even when you turn the engine off there's still residual fuel pressure within the fuel rail, so what do you suppose will happen if one or more of the seats in the thingamabobs were leaking? come on think about it, might that leak into the cylinder and past the piston rings into your engine oil? If I were to have to guess I'd say yes that could be a very good explanation. and no I have no ASE certs, I wont even get out of bed for the money you make working on passenger cars

I suspect that your thought is probably correct, in which case changing the oil will correct the problem, and remember to turn the gas off before transport. Could possibly be a float or needle valve problem but not likely. Keep and eye on it after changing oil and if it happens again check for float problems.

When you checked the float....... you could have simply just unstuck it, and not knew it.... usually they either stick, float fills with fuel, or the inlet needle or seat start to leak.....
And most of the time, if the breather tube is low enough..... it'll go right through there, into the oil....
That is if either valve is closed.....
