Gateway laptops for me are cheap. Most of the time they also pack in some cool stuff like better Graphics, a Tablet enabled screen, Dual core technology, bigger hard drives and faster processors. Some Gateway laptops are sold for I think the lowest I've seen is $570? not really sure if that's the lowest they could go but there are refurbished laptops also. And about the 3 usb ports, if you buy one but doesn't have 3 ports then you could always buy a splitter which will give you an extra 3-4 more ports and it costs about 15-20 dollars so it's no big deal at all to buy a splitter.

I own a toshiba Satellite which I only paid 1100 for from Best Buy. It has 1.86 Ghz Centrino, 100 GB HD, 1 GB RAM, DVD Writer, 15 IN screen, three USB ports, Built-in Wi-Fi Card. It is a Strong preformer as well

compaq laptops are cheap....
If you want style, go for acer.
not so many people are using Acer in US and the price is reasonable too.
Nowadays, 3USB ports are common, you should find it without any efforts
