Using the hosts file is a great method, depending on why you are blocking the sites. What if I tried to explain it so that it is very easy? Would you give it a shot?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
You just need to go to this folder.
You can go to "My Computer" then "windows" then "system32" then "drivers" then "etc"
Now in this folder, just find the file called hosts and open it.
If it asks you what you want to open it with, just select notepad.

No go to the very bottom of this file and add the sites you want to block, and redirect them to your own computer. This is MUCH easier than it sounds. Just add this line:

127.0.0.1 www.BadWebSite.com

You can add as many of these lines as you want, just replace the www.badwebsite.com in each line with the website you want to block.

When you are done, just save the file.

Your done!

If you want to unblock them, just delete the line.

Assuming you are using Windows XP.....

Open c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in notepad or any other text editor.

Assuming you want to ban google, add the following line to the hosts file:

127.0.0.1 www.google.com

Using this method is better than using the security tab in the internet options menu as it's harder to find by the kids.

One way, in Internet Explorer, is to click on 'Tools', 'Internet Options', click on the tab that says 'Content', at the top is Content Advisor - click on 'Enable' - You can then filter sites by 'Language', 'Nudity', 'Sex' and 'Violence' - by moving the bar to the right on each of these options increases the level of filtering.
