how does telemarketing invade your privacy and why does it matter?

Telemarketing involves having a salesperson (or a whole staff of salespeople) who call people at home and try to sell them anything from newspaper subscriptions to phone or Internet service to magazines to DVDs and CDs; the list goes on and on. Most people consider telemarketing an invasion of your privacy because these phone calls are unsolicited (meaning you didn't call them or express any interest in whatever it is the telemarketers are selling). Over the past decade, the number of telemarketing firms has increased dramatically, and the average person was getting anywhere from 5 to 20 calls from telemarketers per day; most of them between the hours of 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM. Imagine coming home from work every day and literally having your phone ringing off the hook because one telemarketer after another is calling you. That's why the FCC started the "Do Not Call" registry. All you have to do is call a 1-800 number or visit their website, register your phone number, and it becomes illegal for a telemarketer to call you.

Does that help?

they don't invade once, it's consistent. they invade by bothering, pestering, taking up your private time. it matters because time is precious to many. too precious to be spent on the phone with idiotic telemarketers who don't accept 'no thank you' for an answer.

i work part time as a telemarker and to be honest hate doing it, but do it for the extra cash. Basically you get a list of phone numbers and just call them non-stop untill someone picks up and pitch them your serice. I work for a mortage company so i call people at night and ask them to refinance their mortage or consolidate their loans. most of the time no one answers and the people that do wind up hanging up before i can finish talking. trust me it suxs.
