zero is a number, it just has no value. you need another number to sit next to "1" to make "10".

no, its not a number. it is either nothing, or a place holder to differentiate numbers in the 1's, 10's, 100's column, etc.
assuming we are talking about base 10, otherwise the columns are diffferent of course.
