Multiply through by x to get rid of denominators so 5x+10-x=-5-x
Combine like terms 4x+10=-5-x
Move like terms to one side
5x=-15 so x=-3 should work.

Unless of course, you forgot to use parenthesis so if the "real" problem is 5+10/(x-1)=-5/(x-1) then multiply through by x-1 to get
5(x-1)+10=-5
5x-5+10=-5
5x+5=-5
5x=-10
x=-2

Porportional Problem

Multiply the means

Multiply the extremes

5 + 10x / x - 1 = 5 / x - 1

The means are 5(x - 1)

The extrement are 5 + 10x(x - 1)

5(x - 1) = (5 + 10x)(x - 1)

Multiplying the right side of the equation

(5 + 10x)(x - 1)= 5x + 10x² - 5 - 10x = 10x² - 5x - 5

5x - 5 = 10x² - 5x - 5

5x - 5 - 5x = 10x² - 5x - 5 - 5x

- 5 = 10x² - 10x - 5

- 5 + 5 = 10x² - 10x - 5 + 5

0 = 10x² - 10x

0 = 10x (x - 1)
