I do not know how to open/view one that I received via email.

It's an archive file, that is, a file that contains other files. Usually (but not necessarily) compressed. It is similar to a ZIP file.
There are several applications that open RAR files. I use WINRAR.

It's a file that has had it's contents compressed, to make it smaller to send to other people.
The person recieving the file must expand it before it can be opened.
A great program for .rar files is WinRar (essentially freeware).
You can download it from http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
After the 40 day evaluation, you'll get a little window asking you to register - just press 'close' and WinRar carries on working.
Just be careful though - only open zip or rar files from people that you trust - if you don't recognise the sender of the e-mail, don't open the file - it will most probably contain a virus.

RAR is a proprietary file format for data compression and archiving, developed by Eugene Roshal (hence the name RAR: Roshal ARchive)
Visit http://www.rarlab.com for the program you require to uncompress your file.

sreach the internet for the program and install it then extract the file
