Its usually refered to as an 'experimental design' and is basically how an experiment was conducted. For example, if testing how well a drug works you would eventually test it on people so....

were participants in group A OR grp B (independant group design)

or were partipants in group A and then group B (repeated measures design)

Experimental design is to make a design that is for experimenting the design available.

Say in Electronics v have a design for a printed circuit board(PCB) [It is the green board that v c in the electronic gadgets] first it experimented on diff layout of designs on a system or a paper and then it is finalised on a PCB.
