You don't until you download it. I download all programs to a folder I call DownJunk. After the download is complete just scan that folder with your anti-virus. You should then be able to open or run the program safely.

You can never be 100% sure that software is virus free.

If the software is on removable media like a disk or CD and it comes from a reputable manufacturer, most likely it will not be infected with a virus. (There have been cases of companies distributing infected media).

If you are downloading software from the Internet, make sure you have a decent anti-virus program that has the latest virus protection files installed. Have your anti-virus program scan the file after downloading. Keep in mind that thousands of new viruses are created every day that your virus scanner may miss.

Always choose reputable sites to download from, always keep your virus protection up-to-date, and always be careful of what you download.

You should have some kind of antivirus program on your computer. There are good free ones, so there is no excuse for not having one. If you have this protection on your computer and start to download a suspected file, the antivirus will stop it and notify you. Get Avast, download and install and. I've used it for 3 years and had no virus in that time.
