Gift Card Alert!!!!!

Well the crooks have found a way to rob you of your gift card balance. If you buy Gift Cards from a display rack that has various store cards you may become a victim of theft. Crooks are now jotting down the card numbers in the store and then wait a few days and call to see how much of a balance THEY have on the card. Once they find the card is "activated", and then they go online and start shopping. You may want to purchase your card from a customer service person, where they do not have the Gift Cards viewable to the public.

Please share this with all your family and friends...

Comments: True. I found confirmation in several different news sources that this form of consumer fraud is indeed on the rise. The Wall Street Journal described the scheme as follows:

In one scam, crooks copy numbers from gift cards hanging on store racks. After the cards are purchased and activated, buyers use them to shop online by entering the card numbers.

So do the thieves. To figure out which cards have been activated, they phone an 800 number to check on balances for card numbers they've copied. When they discover activated cards, they use the card numbers to buy merchandise on a store's Web site, explains Dan Doyle, vice president of loss prevention at Beall's Inc., a Southeastern department-store chain.

Given a selection between prepaid gift cards displayed on an open rack versus ones kept behind a customer service counter, clearly the latter is the safer choice. Some gift cards have additional security protection in the form of a PIN which can only be read by scratching the coating off the back of the card. Always check such cards for tampering before you purchase them.

Personally it depends on who its for. Im 25 & I would get my parets a gift card. Maybe my mom a certificate to get a manicure & pedicure.

I suppose if your dad shops somewhere like lowes or home depot that wouldnt be a bad idea.

This year I got my sister a $50 Sephora gift card (make up store) then she told us she wanted an mp3 player so my dad & I went in together to get that, which was $100 each.

My best friend....well I cant figure out what to get her & a gift card isnt something Id like to do for her.

It all depends on the person I suppose.

Another option is a Visa gift card. If you have a national city bank near you, I know they sell them. Or you can just do a search on google for visa gift cards & im sure find somewhere close that sells the. THe good thing about those is that they can spend it wherever Visa is accepted!

GOOD LUCK!

Personally, I love gift cards. If you can't think of anything that she needs or wants, it's best to give a gift card instead of a present that gets put in a closet or given to the Goodwill.

I don't know your sister's situation, but at 23, the best gift is usually cash/gift card.

The amount should be whatever you can reasonably afford. Most people (especially family) aren't concerned about the gift or its value. They're just happy that you remembered them.

Suggestion:
Make up a small basket that relates to the gift card. For example: If you are going to give a gift card for a book store.. Put the card in a tiny basket with a book marker, a packet of hot chocolate and a coffee cup.
It makes it more personal.

I really like gift cards too, but they arent too personal, so as long as the person you are buying for wont have a fit becuase you didnt put tons of thought into the gift, I think they're great! They allow you to buy for yourself, so as long as you buy it from the right store according to what the person likes, I think you should be fine. And the amount is whatever you can afford, nothing less than $10 though unless of course its for Starbucks or someplace like that. Good luck.

I'm gettting at least three people gift cards this year. All in the amount of $50. My Sister and Brother-in-law asked for them and with my Dad it's just easier to let him pick out his own gift.

The amount of money should correspond to some type of item you thought they might like.

If you know a person loves music, give them enough for one or 2 CDs. Video games: same. Clothes: enough fo an outfit/sweater-- whatever you thought they might like.

Some people don't like gift cards because they think there's no thought being put into it. But if you give a gift card and say "This is so you can buy yourself a _________________ I know you wanted, but I wasn't sure which one you wanted."

Gift cards can also prevent things like two years ago when my brother got 3 copies of Napolean Dynamite.

Can I be apart of the family? Yes, gift cards are an efficient and honest way to give a gift. Just make sure you give them a gift card either from their favorite place or on a Mastercard/or Visa giftcard. I do and my family loves it. Plus it saves you the hassle of standing in long lines.
