New management is probably the first thing.
Next would be a new philosophy on how to run their franchise.
They really do need to try to trade their high priced players for either prospects or other high priced players with only 1-2 years left in their contracts. This'll get them to a point where they can start over from a clean slate.
They need to take a look 1-2 years out and see who will be available that they can build their franchise around. Right now, they have a bunch of guys that, in the beginings of their careers, were thought to be "franchise players" but were proven to be otherwise. If they can wait out the remainders of the contracts that would be great. Of course, being in NYC it will be hard for them to sit there and die a slow death because of all of the media and attention that they get.
When they knew the "Glory Days" were all but over they should've used the same approach that the Bulls used...bild from the draft and sign quality mid-level free agents until you're ready to compete.

Change in managment, getting rid of all the high priced do-nothings that stock the roster and start over. Too bad under present NBA rules this will take years. How long before they trade David Lee, Channing Frye, and Nate Robinson for Nazr Muhammad???

Seriously, they should just give up and sell the franchise. They just flat out suck. Way too many overpaid cocky stars and they just can't play well as a team. To fix themselves they got to get rid of Marbury and Francis or just wait till their contracts expire to get new players. But this team is going to need perhaps a decade to get back to elite status. But they really are screwed. Isiah Thomas just did a horrible job assembling this team. I could have done better.

fire isaiah, hire some assistant coach from pat rileys' miami heat (hey, it worked with eric mangini and the jets)... Cut or trade or drop Marbury, Francis, maybe Crawford, and possibly Richardson. that will take all of the ball hogs off the team. then start at PG: Nate Robinson SG: Mardy Collins SF: David Lee PF: Channing Frye (when he's healthy) and C: Eddy Curry.

they need to re-evaluate their long term contracts that they hand out... they are pretty good at getting good players, and good coaches... but they pay too much for un-mesh-able player/coach combinations... i hope they will figure out a new combination ot two...
