Well not necessarily, but you could own mineral rights on it or someone else could own the mineral rights.
This would give you a license, so to speak, to drill for oil or whatever on your property.
Edit: Owning the mineral rights would be very beneficial if you discovered gold or diamonds underground.
Either way, you still have to get permits for anything that you do and the county that you get that from will tell you where to draw the line. For instance, if you wanted to drill a well, you would go to the courthouse and get a permit (or the hired contractor would) and they would tell you the particular local laws regarding that.

The earth belongs to GOD not the people. I think if you look at it in a political way, the government own the land you just own the property.

this is a particularly stable question. it would be genuine seeking to anticipate that there is a intensity shrink on your land possession. even though if i'm conscious of an altitude possession rule. beforehand of an airspace regulation in regard to an persons components, the land proprietor might desire to legally impose a no fly zone over that components. My information is, that presently after the popularization or air shuttle this type of precise replaced into taken far flung from the land proprietor.

I think there is a limit.. but interesting question..
for example.. if you own the "mineral" rights,, you get to claim the income from any oil thats under your land.. But I dont know how far down they consider it yours.. Cause if they drill like 1 mile down and hit lava or something.. I dont think thats yours...
hmm? makes for an interesting question though... I'll see what others have to say

Several people brought up taxes and" you don't own it ,the gov. does"...almost correct..if you have a verified LAND GRANT, the gov. can not tax the property. Any property can have a land grant title, provided you are the sole owner including the mineral rights.
I don't know of any webpages in particular but look up "land grants" and check it out.

Yes. You can dig down but only within the surface area assigned to your ownership.

Good question. If they do, and all pieces of land join at the center of the earth, it gives a whole new slant to the commandment to "Love thy neighbor".

thats correct, but you dont own:
sewer lines
gas lines
water lines
sidewalk area
curb area
and i dont think you own the airspace above a reasonable point, depending on the zoning laws in the area. otherwise you could press charges against American Airlines every other day for tresspassing.

Actually, you don't own the land. You just rent it from the government. Don't believe me? Don't pay your property taxes, and you'll see how long you live there.

No, you only own it until your property starts tampering with government and mother nature. plus you never really do own the property since you pay taxes to the government to keep it.
