First it's great to read about a new Beatles fan, about 40 years after they were really great.
Choose to start with not a single album, but the two anthologies, the red album and the blue album. With those you've already got a pretty good collection on 4 CDs. If you want to go deeper, there is "Anthology" with CD, DVD and book.
I remember pretty well those days. When a new single or a new album from the Beatles was announced to be sold from a certain day on, one could be sure the first stock would be sold out within one day. And the fans waited for the shops to open like nowadays, when a new Harry Potter book comes into the shops.
The question which CD (the Beatles never made a CD, that technology didn't exist then) was the best I cannot answer. That's a question of taste. Sir George Martin, Producer of the Beatles, said only these days, he preferred Abbey Road, because there is something of a combination of rock and classical composition art, something John Lennon didn't want in the beginning. "I'm a rocker, my songs last three minutes", quotes Sir George John Lennon.

Definately go with Beatles: One. It has a little bit of everything. A must for newcomers!!! It has very popular early hits... Love Me Do, She Loves You, I Want To Hold Your Hand...all the way to the "Yellow Submarine-Era" music...such as Yesterday, Hey Jude, We Can Work It Out. Great CD!!!! This was the first Beatles CD I bought and it made me even a bigger fan than I was before!!!! Enjoy!!!

Good question !! I have listened to them from the beginning , but (maybe it's that I'm mellowing with age) , I am leaning toward the Anthology collection . It is a good comprehensive group of recordings . And I absolutely LOVE the revised version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps . For other ideas you can go to www.beatles.com , www.georgeharrison.com , or the others . Whatever you choose , you can't go wrong with the fab 4 . May you enjoy the group that has influenced all of western music for over 40 years .

It depends, really. There are kind of 2 Beatles. There's the pop/rock side that they played early in their career. Then there's the experimental/avant-garde side that they did later in their career (after they started doing drugs).

If you like the poppy side better, you should try "Hard Day's Night".
If you like their experimental stuff better, you should check out The White Album, or "Abbey Road." You might also want to try getting one of their greatest hits albums, too.

Rubber Soul or Abbey Road.
If you buy the late stuff, like the White Album (hardly their best work, by the way), you'll not appreciate the progression of their music as much.
Back in the day, bands actually made musical progression as they matured; not like this "any jiveass that can talk through the music, one hit" crap they put out today...

Do not, do not, do not buy collections! That's like letting someone else decide for you what the best songs are. Here's what I say. If you like to smoke weed, start with Abbey Road. If you like LSD and stuff like that, start with Sgt. Pepper. If you like to drink, start with The White album. If you don't really like to do any of these things, start with Rubber Soul. Really, though, you can't go wrong with any of their albums.

I like Rubber Soul myself. It was my first Beatles album I bought.

that's a tough one.

I would get Past Masters Vol. 1 or Vol. 2.

Those CDs contain all of their singles, including the B-sides that are not available on any or their original albums.
