I believe you are thinking of Conductor Louis Frémaux, who served twice in the Foreign Legion. When he came back to civilian life after having been called back to the Legion in 1956 for duty in Algeria, he was hired by Prince Rainier of Monaco to refurbish the Monte Carlo Orchestra. (Source #1) (Historical Note: The French Foreign Legion left Algeria in June 1962, just before the proclamation of that country's independence.)
rdenig_male: Do not confuse the "Légion étrangère" with the "Légion d'honneur." The first is a unit within the French army, whereas the second is a decoration conferred upon men and women for outstanding achievements in military or civil life. Also, the asker clearly states that he is looking for a French conductor.
Pigsney: Jules Louis Semler-Collery, born in 1902, was sent to Morocco (not Algeria) early in his career to set up the Foreign Legion symphony orchestra, but he returned to France in 1931. (Source #2)

Hmmm, interesting question. I've done a search but it hasn't thrown anything up. The conductor Ricardo Muti received the Legion of Honour and Robert Shaw, conductor of the Atlanta Symphony recieved an award from the French Embassy in Washington The Americam Jewish composer Herman Berlinski was in the FFL, but way back in the 1940s. If you have any more info, put it on as an additiion.
To Mama Frog - I am aware of the difference between the French Foreign Legion and the Legion D'Honneur - I merely noted that award as I had been undable to find anything more on the question.

ok i did no longer examine all of this as a results of fact it replaced into quite long yet i think of i understand the place you're getting at. It began returned whilst united statesa. replaced into turning out to be a rustic by itself. returned whilst we had to combat off the British and the French helped the human beings, yet after see you later they retreated. The French had to assist the human beings as a results of fact they needed land in the Americas... (Quebec, Montreal) and had the Louisiana purchase however the human beings offered it from them. i think of it could be quite cool if it have been French speaking there yet in any case. So as a results of fact they left the human beings even however they did help the human beings called them cowards. it quite is quite plenty it.
