China, fantastic growth rate, emerging knowledge economy, they have allied themselves with most of the resource producing nations. They have not pissed most countries off, they have established good diplomatic relations with most of the World, has invested heavily in Africa Europe and Asia and own most of the debt in the US, which is a bad move since the interest rates are rather low and would be better served in purchasing industries/stock but the US congress can only hold them at bay for so long and they will move to purchase most US companies soon.

The reason why the US is still afloat is because China is paying for the vast borrowing that the US needs to sustain iteself. They say he who holds the purse strings ....

i don't think there will ever be another superpower, at least not in this civilization. in 1946, the united states economy was booming, we could fill every job we needed to fill (agricultural, manufacturing, professional, etc), and we had atomic weapons, which was a huge deal.

no one country could put together the whole package today. there are only a few countries in the world that could feed themselves, and for them, it's not usually in their best interest to do that. military supremacy means less and less with each passing day (remember, we got attacked on sept 11 by a bunch of guys who came up with a scheme, not by a country or even an organized political faction). economic supremacy is fleeting. the usa has a lot of money, but if 40 percent of china or india is middle class or higher, guess what, they're more economically powerful than us.

the challenge of the future won't be to establish a country as a superpower, but how to stay relevant.

i could say Russia or China. extra probable China because of the fact Russia's financial device is often going to be a undertaking as is their puppet government. via the type you're forgetting the Eighties, wherein the two the Soviet Union and the U.S. have been super powers. :)

I don't think there will be a national superpower. I think the continents will form alliances, so we'll have North America, Asia, and Europe as the superpowers, with South America an up and comer, Africa desparate but vocal and pushy, and Australia sitting on the outside laughing at everyone else.

If we continue to allow fanatical islam to slime it's way through international channels Iran will emerge as a giant internationally.

However, when and if that happens and if there are still 6 permanent members on counsel in the UN, they will come together. That should turn the Mid-East into a world step child.

That's a lot of "if", I don't think anyone knows absolutely but it's one theory.
