How long until we totally replace the home stereo system with some kind of computer jukebox that downloads whatever we want to listen to from the internet? And yes I know the IPod already exists and gets us a long way there, but we are not quite there yet. So my question is really whether I should go to Tower Records sale and buy a lot of CD's for 60% off, or whether I'm going to be throwing all my CD's in the garbage in a year or two anyway.

63 more months, when all inventoried CD players are sold. You will not be throwing them away because in 32 years they will be worth a fortune to kids collecting antique music storage media. Plus, you will be like all other parents/grandparents "I want you to hear what I used to listen to when I was your age" and you will bring them into your computer room with a still connected and functioning CD player/burner and make them sit down while you play........what? All those CD's you got at 60% off. And the kids will be wondering in their heads (because they do not want to get you upset), "why would anyone spend money on something that only stored 600megs and in a non-electronic format - poor dad/grandpa?"

No one can give you an accurate answer, as all answers are speculation. There are some new formats coming out including blueray, which may eventually be practicle for music listning, but right now they are too costly. Digital format is quite popular, but I don't think we will see the death of the CD for a long time.......you can still buy VHS, and that is a format that has been around for quite some time, and lived well past it's prime.

Well, eventually they will be obsolete. But keep in mind, they still make and sell VCR players, so it'll take a while. I do not have an ipod either, and don't have any plans to get one anytime soon.

Come on guys..months?!?! No way. We are looking at several more years. Not everyone has a computer and I still prefer to buy CD's over itunes anyday. You can always convert your tracks to your computer later..and i get sick of the license restrictions that come with digital downloads. Alot of people still want to buy something that is a physical object and play from that...

several years....
