Do you have any specific recommendations for a toy for a 2 year old? This is for a child my mom and I babysit for. So it shouldn't be a major type gift.

oops, he's a boy. And I should add, he's not a baby-ish type boy either. Most "baby" toys he'd probably just look at me like, 'are you kidding me?'

You can get some really nice cute gift ideas just by walking down the toy aisle. Blocks are always a classic idea, they make some cute ones now. You can get a video like baby einstein.. or some cute bath toys. People makes some cute gifts that are for 2-5, so they can enjoy them longer. Look for toys that have a larger age range... you'll get the most bang for your buck.

Since you've interacted with the child, what are some things he or she likes? Get something that requires the child to interact with the toy, like a puzzle or building blocks.
Books that require a child to touch the picture are always fun. Things like "Pat the Bunny" or "Pat the Puppy". Or even if it's not a touch book, get some favorites like Dr. Seuss or "Goodnight Moon".
Don't get him videos or toys that only require the child to sit there. It's handy, but a child needs human and physical interaction.

Books are a great idea, but honestly a big, empty box is about the best thing you can give a little kid! My kids had toys up the wazoo when they were little, but their favorite thing was an empty box, preferably big enough to climb into.
