I am a VITA volunteer and talk to a lot of people who come in to our site and have had their taxes filed at H&R Block, sometimes bringing copies of their H&R B return from the previous year. For fairly straightforward returns, they are competent, but charge a lot. People have told me they've paid close to $100 for simple returns (state and federal). If you have anything really complicated, a CPA would be better.
If your income is under around $40,000 or you're over 65, find a VITA or TCE site near you. They'll do the same thing H&R Block would do, but there's no charge - it's a volunteer program. Check out irs.gov to find a site.

i have used HR Block, for i have a side business. i use them over a small tax company for peace of mind. they have an assurance clause that can be signed. if you did get audited they would represent you.
I can say they do not always have the brightest individuals, but they will follow the rules and there programs do not let them deviate that much. if you tell them an amount they will enter the amount. It is still on you to give them the correct information.
If there is a special document you will be filling out by all means go there. if you are filing short form with out deductions do it electronically.

I've used them and I've been a preparer for them.
If you have a unique situation be sure to tell the receptionist what your situation is and that you want a highly experienced preparer OR find out if there is an "H&R Block Premium" office in your area. Premium offices will charge more but they 'recruit' some of the most experienced preparers in the area to work there.
Make sure you are comfortable with your preparer and ask for a more experienced person if you are not comfortable with him or her.

they suck. they are not real accountants, they don't have any special degree or experience. they are people who take an hr block taxation course, and get hired to the company by passing the course. u r better off going to a firm with real accountants for real advice.

If your taxes aren't overly complicated, just get a copy of TurboTax. You just fill in the blanks off of your W2's and other tax documents and it does all of the work.
H&R block uses a similar program and charges more.
