In a controlled environment , people are told to facially express sadness, joy, laughter, etc. Then on- lookers have to decide which person is doing which expression. After this go to the street theatre etc, and do the same, this time with out the people being told what to do. Build up sketches and photos of expressions to back up your findings.

Go to a public place and watch people as they interact, try to get close enough to hear their conversations and just watch their expressions. Don't let them know what you are doing because then they will be consciously aware of their expressions and control them. Good Luck!
