What is something he enjoys, and what can amplify it?

For example, if he likes grilling out, try a 'Barbeque Master' kit- a cool apron, some great tools, a digital thermometer, some raw charcoal nuggets (instead of the typical briquettes), some flavorful woods, etc. Also- food is good. Try some top-of-the line streaks (http://www.omahasteaks.com) or sauces.

Family? Are there places nearby you can get him a membership to that he can go to and/or take the family to? A good zoo or children's museum maybe?

Do YOU have an interest or talent you can overlap with his? Do you like scrapbooking? Can you help him scrapbook some vacations or military experiences, etc.?

As a dad, some of the items on my wish list that might help you include:
- Comfy slippers, ideally a sheepskin-lined leather/suede thing that will hold up for a while.
- Warm, snuggly clothes- robe, sweatshirt, chamois shirt, flannel shirts, etc.
- A year's worth of snacks- a monthly delivery of a grab-bag of jerky, cookies, chips, etc. If the kids are creative about it, each month will have a theme- Superbowl, Chips and Dips, World of Cheese, etc. {I like this kind of gift as a giver and a recipient- low priced each month, keeps on giving, something you can keep or share, and most importantly- something that creates a memory!}
- Games- I am hoping to build a collection of those 'bookcase' games- Risk, etc. in nice book-like boxes but games for my PDA and 'fidget' games and toys are great also!
- A new wallet. I rarely buy them for myself. For other guys, this might be a watch or whatever.

This won't work for everyone, but my own dad's favorite gift was a fishtank many years ago. It was a simple one to start with, but it launched him on a lifetime of keeping and enjoying fish.

Good luck!

My dad always likes clothes because he hates shopping, so it saves him a trip to the mall.
