I would say $30-$50 dollars!! It should also be very sentimental to the baby.

I'm sure there are traditional rules, but I would say - these days - anything from nothing - men usually don't attend the baby shower - to helping to meet many needs and buy lots of the big stuff that is still needed after the shower. It depends on how close you are - how much the couple already has and where your heart is with them. Like okay - I have in laws where I don't even want gifts because they are not totally happy about having to add another responsibility to our family. But, I mean the godfather is chosen, loved and totally accepted by both parents in most cases and so WOW - just ask them what they need and what you can do.

If they have a baby registry just look on there and see what looks like something they really need. Keep it with in your budget, more or less money dosen't mean you care more or less about the kid. It's the thought that counts. For me, My rule of thumb for anything I attend is about $25 or $30. I do sometimes spend more if it's like my sister's wedding or something like that, but for a baby shower gift, I'd just look at their registry and see what looks like they can use.

Sometimes a fun thing to do is to buy all or a bunch of the less expensive gifts that total up to what you planned on spending. Sometimes the less expensive things aren't gotten because everyone wants to buy the "big" things. You can buy a bunch of the less expensive items and put them together in a diaper bag or a wicker basket and wrap it with some cellophane type wrapping. It's kind of a fun idea.
