I work as a primary school teacher teaching 6-7 year olds. I am currently 10 weeks pregnant and work are aware of this. I had 2 teacher trainees last half term and it was alot of work and extra time, something I know we are prepared to do as teachers. However, I have heard that we have more students in January and that 2 are going to be put with me. Normally I would be happy about this but I want to ease off any extra commitments job wise whilst I am pregnant. Do I have a right to refuse to have these 2 students or is it something I have to do? They would be with me for 4 weeks. I would appreciate any advice from other teachers, head teachers etc?

I would think that if you speak to your principal about your concerns that the two of you can reach a concesses. I am sure he/she will try to keep you happy and comfortable. Perhaps you can have the first trainee in your room, and if you find it very trying or stressful, the principal will be more understanding.

Where I work, we do have the right to ask not to be included in these activities, however, the district tries to find another place to put the trainees.

It's a tough call. The university would NOT be happy to find out that you had unwanted student teachers in your class. They want student teachers to be in environments where they will be welcomed and supported. However, your school (probably) receives money from the university based on the number of student teachers they accept. More student teachers equals more money. I think you would need to go back and look at the terms of your contract. If your responsibilities include "training and development" then you're stuck. If there is nothing in the contract indicating you have to train other teachers, you should talk to the principal AND the head of student teacher placements at the university. Having them in your class when you really don't want them isn't fair to those student teachers.

You are under no obligation to take student teachers. Explain this to the college that is sending them. Consider something carefully though, four extra hands might ease some of your physical requirements while you are pregnant.

well, I'm not a teacher, but, id think you have the choice as to whom you have in your class.think about when you were younger, your teacher could choose who could stay in their class and who couldn't (i.e. the "trouble makers"). just my opinion
