Realism isn't the point of a performance -- or of art, for that matter. If I want to see realism and the way real people behave, I'll go down to the bus station.

What I want from my actors (I'm a director) are two things: A sense of theatricality and heightened reality and an ability to observe human behavior and refine it down to an observable form.

The best performances I've ever seen -- on stage or on screen -- are those that have taken realistic human behavior and bumped it up enough to make it artistic. Even Brando was theatrical, for pete's sake; his Stanley Kowalski is nothing but bold choices, all of which are scaled perfectly for the medium in which he was working.

I would try and put it into the context of my life and let the emotions of how the scene made me feel guide my acting response. I hope it makes since to you and helps.

I want to try that kind of acting where you close your eyes when you're talking to the person, and open them when you're not talking to them... and then you close them again when you're talking to them.
