Well, it was first discovered by the Native Americans. There are two possibilities for their origin. Some of them came over the ice bridge that connected Siberia to Alaska during the Ice Age. New evidence suggests there was an earlier migration to South America and that these people have possible links to the native Japanese (Not the Japanese we think of today. They were a later migration.) and Australians.
There is some evidence that Lief Erickson, a Scandavian, later discovered the Americas and what is now Greenland.
Later on Columbus, an Italian sailor, was sent out by the King and Queen of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, to discover the Americas.
There is also some limited evidence that Africans had sailed to the Americas before Columbus, but there is no direct proof for this claim.

You can't discover a place where people already live. The native americans are indigenous to America. As far as people from Europe, etc. coming here, Leif Ericson the Viking first arrived in America .. Columbus never set foot here but "paved the way" for other exploreres. Amerigo Vespucci (of Italy) was actually the first Explorere to actually come to America, hence the name America (after Amerigo).

I always found strange that Westerners (I am one) consider they discover countries already populated.
To me neither of the Europeans above.
If the Amerindians did not go to Asia to populate it, then the Asians went to what we call America.
When Columbus went there, the horses were gone.
I say so because not so long ago, they discover (archaeologists) the bones of a smaller version of the present one in America.
So before they became extinct they crossed over to Asia...
And if the horses did it, why would the men haven't done the same?
